Updates from the Principal

September 2015

September 2015

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We have had a wonderful start to the school year! The students are well adjusted to their new classroom routines and they are ready to begin an exciting year of learning! As the year begins, it will be important to help your child to prepare for a successful school year. Having a consistent nightly routine of completing homework, practice math facts and reading daily will greatly benefit your child.

As you are aware, it takes a strong parent/teacher partnership to educate our children. We cannot do it alone and we rely on your commitment to your child’s education. Therefore, it will be important that you establish a relationship with your child’s teacher early in the year. Attending Back-to-School Night is a great way to begin forging this relationship. During the session with your child’s teacher, you will learn about his or her expectations for the year in such areas as homework, tests, grading, class rules, etc. You will also learn about the curriculum for your child’s grade level. This knowledge will help you with follow up at home. For social studies and science, knowing the curriculum can help you in planning family outings that support the curriculum in these areas.

Ongoing communication will be very important to ensure your child’s success. I highly recommend that you schedule an appointment with your child’s teacher within the next week or two if you have any concerns about him or her. While the sending teachers do share information with the receiving teachers, it is always best to share the concern from your perspective. If you have questions or concerns that arise during the year, you can schedule an appointment, call, or email the teacher depending on the nature of the concern. You should receive a response within 24 hours. Please remember that you should always begin with the classroom teacher if you do have concerns. Our teachers are always responsive. If you have shared your concerns and you feel that the issue has not been resolved, you may then contact me. I know that your child will have a successful school year if you are involved.

Next week, we will be hosting our Back-to School Night on Thursday, September 10th. This is an opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher, to learn about the grade level curriculum, and to hear the expectations for your child. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for the PTA and the Fathers’ Club and to receive information about the programs they sponsor for our students during the year.   The Book Fair will be open during Back- to-School Night.   Your child will be bringing home a wish list this week so you will be able to peruse and perhaps purchase the books on their lists. If you can carpool with a neighbor or a friend on this evening, it would be much appreciated! We won’t be parking on our new playground surface this year.

As the year progresses, I hope you will join us for the community events that have been scheduled. Our first event, Tashua’s 50th Birthday Celebration will be held on Friday, September 18th from 5:00 – 7:30 PM on the playground. This will be a fun-filled event that will be enjoyed by all! Starting in October, I will meet with parents every other month for Coffee and Conversation.   At the start of each of these meetings, we create an agenda together.   This will give you the opportunity to add topics you would like to discuss. I encourage you to attend! It is a great way to keep abreast of what is happening in our school community. The first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14th from 8:45 – 9:45 AM.

Attending the PTA and Father’s Club meetings is another way to become informed. The first Father’s Club meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16th at 8:00PM and the first PTA meeting of the year is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24th at 7:30PM. Both of these meetings will be held in our media center.

This is going to be a great school year and I look forward to working with you and your children!
