Library News from Ms. Cassidy

The end of the year is rapidly approaching and all grade levels are gearing up for final projects! In addition to our busy project schedule we hosted some special events in April. Thanks to the generosity of the PTA and PTSA Tashua was able to host two author visits in April. On April 5th, Lisa Herrington, local author of more than 50 non-fiction easy readers, met with our K-2 students to discuss her research and writing process. She showed samples of her work throughout the stages of creation and publication and shared strategies she uses to research her books. The timing worked perfectly with some of the grade level research writing units!

On April 26th Lauren Tarshis, author of the popular “I Survived” series, visited with 3-5 grades. She shared her experience as a student growing up and how she got started as a writer of historical fiction. She discussed her research process and even shared an excerpt from her new book! The kids were definitely inspired.

One other highlight of April every year is the Nutmeg Election. The Nutmeg Award is a Connecticut book competition decided each year by a popular vote. Participating upper elementary students vote in April for their favorite of ten nominated fiction novels and the state winner is announced in May. Over seventy 4th and 5th graders participated in Nutmeg voting and this year Loot, by Jude Watson, was the Tashua School winner. We will have to wait until May 15 to learn the state winner.
