Sneak a Peek at the SBAC Practice Test

Are you curious about the types of problems students solve on the SBAC assessment?  The Smarter Balanced Practice and Training Tests provide students with a preview of test questions aligned to academic standards for their grade level (grades 3,4,5) in both English language arts/literacy and math.  This year, the NGSS science test will also be available for fifth grade students as well.  This resource can help parents and students learn more about the Smarter Balanced assessments.

The Practice Tests are available in each grade and is similar in format and structure to the actual test. The Training Test is available in three grade bands (3–5, 6–8, and high school) and provides a sample of each kind of question students might encounter, allowing them to become familiar with the testing software and navigation. Additional information to access the practice test is available below.  If you would like, you may review the practice test using the instructions below:  http://www.smarterbalanced.org/

  1. Go to site above and scroll to TELL ME MORE ABOUT… and click PRACTICE TESTS.
  2. Then click PRACTICE AND TRAINING TESTS PAGE.
  3. Select CONNECTICUT
  4. Click TAKE THE PRACTICE AND TRAINING TEST
  5. Click the green SIGN IN
  6. Select your grade level from drop down and then click YES.
  7. Select the option you would like from the SMARTER BALANCED PRACTICE TESTS (see below).
  8. Scroll down and click SELECT.
  9. Scroll again and click BEGIN TEST NOW.

NOTES:  When taking the practice test, you must type in a response in order to move to the next question.  Click ‘Next’ on top left to move to next question.  Also, students in grades 3-5 are only assessed with the Math Practice Test, Math Performance Task, and the ELA Practice test.  They are NOT given the ELA Performance Task.
