Dear Parents/Guardians:

It is hard to believe we are more than halfway through the school year! Our students continue to be eager to learn and they are making fine academic progress!

One of our building goals this year is to use a variety of resources and instructional strategies to increase our students’ performance in the area of writing across all content areas. In order to accomplish this goal, grade level teams have been working interdependently to analyze student writing samples, set goals for improvement, and plan for effective instruction. As part of our professional development, we have been unpacking the Common Core State Standards for writing, reviewing our curriculum and instruction to ensure full alignment, examining scoring rubrics and working together to be assured our evaluation of student performance is calibrated across the grade level.

As a staff, we have also been studying more about Growth Mindset and the impact that it has on a student’s development and academic performance.

When you think about yourself and the work that you do with a Growth Mindset, you believe that your traits, habits, personality, skills, and so on are growing and changing. You are not smart or dumb, athletic or clumsy, artistic or not. You are constantly in progress. Effort is the lynchpin of this mindset: Shows how far you will go if you try and failures are viewed as feedback. They may still hurt, but they are not endpoints; they are signposts on ways to proceed in the future. To be successful in developing a growth mindset, it is important for students to acquire these traits….

  • Empathy – The ability to feel how another person is feeling and to imagine what it would be like to be in another’s position; you feel what someone else is feeling in their own heart.
  • Optimism – The ability to feel hopeful that risks are worth taking and believing problems will work out.
  • Resilience – The ability to bounce back and recover from setbacks or failures; trying again and again.
  • Persistence – The ability to stick with something even when it is challenging; not giving up!
  • Flexibility – The ability to see and try many possibilities in order to make something happen Tenacity – The quality of having persistent determination

This month, we will be hosting a reading and math night for parents to learn more about the rigorous learning expectations that are expected of children through the grade levels. During these sessions, parents will be exposed to various learning tasks and be able to see how a question/assignment may be completed, however a child may receive more credit based on the elaboration and detail of the answer that is provided by the student. I am hoping you will be able to join us for these events.

The Informational Reading Night hosted by Ms. Grannis and Mrs. Knapp, our reading consultants, on Tuesday, February 2nd: Grades K-2 6:30 – 7:15 PM Grades 3-5 7:30- 8:15 PM The Informational Math Night will hosted by Mrs. Mangini, our math specialist, on Tuesday, February 9th: Grades K-2 6:30 – 7:15 PM Grades 3-5 7:30- 8:15 PM

As we start the second half of the school year, we are looking forward to an engaging and productive remainder of the school year for all the students.
