A NOTE FROM OUR NURSE ~ September 2016

Vision and Hearing Screenings

Vision and hearing screenings will be done at the end of October. Connecticut state law requires that all
students enrolled in grades K, 1 and 3-5 undergo yearly vision and hearing screenings. The purpose of the
program is to identify possible problems as early as possible. Early detection and intervention may prevent
educational implications. If a problem is suspected, the student will be re-checked at a second screening. If
further consultation is recommended, parents will be notified of the findings and will be asked to seek further
evaluation from their own physician. If you receive a referral for your child, please schedule an appointment as
soon as possible and have the physician complete the back of the referral form and return it to the school nurse.
This year, members of the Lions Club will be assisting with vision screenings using new technology used in
some pediatrician’s offices instead of the traditional chart with letters. This is a more accurate way of
performing screenings and we are hoping that it will lead to less time out of the classroom.
