A Note From Music ~ Mr. Cohen ~ November 2017

note

November brings exciting musical opportunities for the entire school. This month, in anticipation of Thanksgiving, we will focus on themes of integrity, selflessness and gratitude toward others. This gratitude will extend to the annual Veteran’s Day Sing-Along. This school-wide performance for those who have served our country will feature patriotic music from the different branches of the military hosted by the 4th grade. If you are a veteran or you know someone who would like to speak at the assembly (or just be recognized) please have them e-mail me at TCohen@trumbullps.org.
In class, each grade level will discuss the importance of working together, as they combine two or more instrumental lines of music simultaneously. Kindergarten and 1st grade will used un-pitched percussion in various games and songs. 2nd and 3rd graders will use the different bared instruments to create contrasting melodies and harmonies, all while using their voices. 4th grade will focus on musical forms and song structures as they too perform on a number of Instruments. 5th grade’s choral journey has already seen success in two part harmony. November will see that extend to three parts as we learn the bulk of our material for the Winter concert!
In honor of our veterans, here are the lyrics to our national anthem. You can practice at home!

The Star-Spangled Banner
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
